KOTA KINABALU: The state is on alert for flash floods after months-long of dry spell, says Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The state is on alert for flash floods after months-long of dry spell, says Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The state has been facing flash floods recently following downpours, and the wet spell is expected to persist in the coming days. In a statement on Friday , Shafie said all Natural Disaster Committee chairmen in the districts have been directed to be on alert.“They are required to ensure that flood evacuation centres are ready to take in evacuees, if necessary, and to ensure that there are sufficient supplies of food and water as well as hygiene facilities.

"At the same time, my advice to all those living in low lying areas which are prone to flash floods is to remain alert at all times, so that they can move to higher ground without delay,” he added. Local government authorities were also asked to ensure drains are not clogged among measures to mitigate flood risks."This is also the fasting month and all assistance must be rendered as quickly as possible," he added.
