KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood evacuees is rising in Sabah.

A total of 1,209 evacuees were housed at 15 temporary shelters in five flood-stricken districts as of 4pm Monday .

Sabah Civil Defence Department director Kol Kamal Mokhtar said Tenom recorded the highest number of villagers relocated to safety at 751, followed by Kota Belud , Papar , Beaufort and Penampang . Villagers were rescued and relocated in stages as water levels rose rapidly following a continuous downpour from Saturday evening.

Fifty-two villages from six more districts - Kota Marudu, Keningau, Pitas, Membakut, Putatan and Tuaran - were also affected by the floods but there were no relocations. Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the natural disaster committee in all districts have been activated and the state government will also assist those affected.“We have yet to identify those that are affected as there are areas not accessible, but we will find ways to assist them. Hopefully, the situation will improve soon, ” he said.
