LONDON, Jan 22 ― Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has accepted an invitation to meet his British counterpart Ben Wallace to discuss the crisis on the Russia-Ukraine border, a senior UK defence source said today. “The Defence Secretary is glad that Russia has accepted the invitation to talk with his counterpart,” the source said. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Geneva for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following a swing through Europe to shore up US allies’ commitments to hit Russia with sanctions if it goes ahead with an invasion of Ukraine. “Given the last defence bilateral between our two countries took place in London in 2013, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has offered to meet in Moscow instead,” added the source. As the meeting started at Geneva’s lakeside luxury Hotel President Wilson, Lavrov warned that Moscow was not expecting any “breakthrough”. “The Secretary of State has been clear that he will explore all avenues to achieve stability and a resolution to the Ukraine crisis. Russia has massed tens of thousands of troops on its borders with Ukraine, and Western states fear Moscow is planning a new assault on a country it invaded in 2014 to annex the Crimean peninsula.” Tens of thousands of Russian troops are massed on Ukraine’s border, along with an arsenal of tanks, fighting vehicles, artillery and missiles. “The offer of Number 10 to investigate is kind but I shall leave it to the experts.

Russia has denied it plans to invade but the White House believes an attack could now come “at any point”. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, asked about Biden's comments, said Russia had been receiving similar warnings for at least a month. Veteran diplomats who have encountered each other for years, Blinken is known for his unflappable calm and Lavrov for his mordant intensity. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned yesterday that Moscow risks becoming embroiled in a “terrible quagmire” if it invades. In a speech in Australia, the UK’s top diplomat issued a blunt and personal warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he is on the brink of making a major strategic blunder. In Kyiv on Wednesday Blinken sought to reassure Ukraine of US support. He “has not learned the lessons of history,” Truss told Sydney’s Lowy Institute. Cold War redux? Russia, which already fuels a deadly insurgency in eastern Ukraine that has killed more than 13,000 people since 2014, has demanded guarantees that Nato never admit the former Soviet republic or expand otherwise in Moscow’s old sphere. “The Ukrainians will fight this, it could be a quagmire” she said. Blinken’s deputy, Wendy Sherman, and Lavrov’s deputy, Sergei Ryabkov, also met in Geneva last week, where both sides set out seemingly irreconcilable positions. “As with any such allegations, should a criminal offence be reported to the Met, it would be considered,” a spokesman said.
