: A RM17-million project will be implemented in Kampung Belukut to resettle fishermen from the Rancha-Rancha water village who do not own homes, Labuan Corporation chief executive officer Dr Fary Akmal Osman said today.
The Fishermen Resettlement Project will be carried out on 8 ha there and will see the construction of at least 100 houses, she said. Labuan Corporation will be the coordinating and implementing agency for the project that comes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries through the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia , she toldFary said the fishermen who live in the water village must be resettled due to its proximity to the oil and gas industrial zone.
“The resettlement exercise should have been carried out five years ago when several houses were destroyed in a fire,” she said, adding that the delay was due to technical problems such as the approval of the proposed site in Kampung Belukut. An LKIM Labuan spokesman said 244 fishermen have registered with the Fisheries Department and half of them do not own homes and stay with family members. —
