Retired policeman fined RM3,000 after pleading guilty to accepting bribes at KK court
KOTA KINABALU: A retired policeman pleaded guilty to charges of accepting bribes at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Court here.
Jangli, a former staff member of the narcotics unit of the Kota Belud police station, was charged with accepting a total of RM650 bribe from a man between Oct 6, 2016 and March 3, 2017.The accused committed an offence under Section 165 of the Penal Code and is punishable by imprisonment for up to two years, or with a fine, or both.
The judge dropped two other alternative charges after Jangli pleaded guilty to the first charge.Meanwhile, a police officer with the rank of Inspector and another with the rank of Corporal, who also worked at the Kota Belud district police, faced charges of accepting bribes at the same court.
Both accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of accepting bribes involving a total value of RM4,400.The accused, Bobby Rhyne Warry Nawari, 38, was charged with eight counts of accepting a total of RM3,800 in bribes between May 1, 2017 and Aug 30, 2017. headtopics.com
He was allowed bail of RM10,000 with a deposit of RM5,000 with one surety and surrendered his passports.Meanwhile, Jameswell Anak Lakin, 44, is facing three charges of graft totalling RM600 between Nov 4, 2016 and Jan 16, 2017.He was allowed bail with RM6,000 and a deposit of RM3,000 with one surety and surrendered his passport.
All three policemen allegedly accepted the bribes as an inducement not to take action against a man under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.The offences were allegedly committed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which can be punished under Section 24(1) of the same Act.
The court set the case re-mention date for the two accused on Dec 6.The prosecution was led by MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Izzati Sapifee, while the two accused were represented by their respective lawyers. Read more: The Star »
