Penang South Reclamation to affect almost 5,000 fishermen

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub says almost 5,000 fishermen will be affected by the Penang South Reclamation project and the state government must give them adequate compensation. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, July 16, 2019.

THE Penang South Reclamation Project will affect 4,996 fishermen in the state, of which 1,422 are traditional fishermen, said Salahuddin Ayub. The agriculture and agro-based industry minister said the permanent environmental damage that is expected to arise from the project will also affect 51,184 tonnes of catchment with an estimated value of RM555 million a year.
