GEORGE TOWN: Parts of the city were flooded after a flood mitigation contractor forgot to open a floodgate.

The mistake on Saturday , caused streets that rarely flooded, including Jalan Van Praagh, Solok Van Praagh, Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim and village areas in Jalan Sir Ibrahim, to be knee-deep water. When contacted, Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong was fuming over the error.

"At 10am, I called him and reminded him to open the floodgate the moment it started raining. But he told me they couldn't because they were casting concrete in the drain. "By the time the workers got the floodgate fully opened, water had rushed into people's homes already," he said when contacted on Saturday.

Ong said he will lodge a formal complaint with state Drainage and Irrigation Department for action to be taken against the contractor. It was learnt that Ong and the contractor had visited the affected victims and apologized.
