They include the banks of the Seine River and more than a 100 streets in the French capital, including tourist destinations like Montmartre, where the Sacre Coeur basilica is located. As temperatures soared across western Europe, holidaymakers crowded beaches despite health warnings about the risk of infection.

In Brandenburg state, police were already turning people away from the beach at Prenzlau lake. “First time I’ve experienced that in 30 years,” said Prenzlau site manager, Ronny Klein.
