KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained a Panama-registered tanker for illegally anchoring some 11 nautical miles northeast of Tanjung Penawar in eastern Johor waters here.

Tanjung Sedili maritime zone director Capt Mohd Zulfadli Nayan said that MMEA patrol boats detained the vessel at around 11.20am on Thursday while carrying out a routine inspection during Ops Benteng.

“The vessel committed an offence for anchoring without informing or obtaining approval from the Malaysia Marine Department director-general under Section 491B of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952. “Further checks also found the vessel also failed to produce insurance documents, which is an offence under Section 361 of the same Act,” he said in a statement here Friday .

Capt Zulfadli added that the vessel has 15 crewmen including its captain, nine of whom are Chinese nationals and the remaining Indonesians, between the ages 22 and 62 years.
