NSTleader: By all means speak these and a million other languages of the world. But they have their time and place. Bahasa Melayu may be our second or even third tongue, but it precedes all others in making us citizens.

Negaraku is no ordinary song. It is a national anthem. And it must be treated as such. Negaraku is there for a reason. We become Malaysians through it. Negaraku makes a people. And the language is Bahasa Melayu. Article 152 of the Federal Constitution makes this abundantly clear.

Some ask why not, pointing to official school texts that have the national anthem in Mandarin and Tamil. This is frivolous. What’s worse, such disputation is mischievous. To them we say this: try singingin Mandarin, Tamil or Arabic. Or for that matter in Bahasa Melayu. It is about being a good citizen. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Kuala Lumpur has a lot to answer.
