“The development model that enabled Malaysia to successfully transition from low- to middle-income needs to be re-examined to meet the challenges of tomorrow. We need to re-look at the way policies are set and the roles of government and institutions to improve Malaysia’s future socio-economic growth, ” he said during the launch of the World Bank’s flagship report, Aiming High - Navigating the Next Stage of Malaysia’s Development, yesterday.
The report sets out a roadmap for Malaysia to fulfill its potential, transition to high-income status and sustain equitable growth beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. Tengku Zafrul said the government is committed to continually assess the quality, inclusivity, and sustainability of Malaysia’s growth. Tengku Zafrul pointed out that Malaysia faced several challenges including a looming international debt crisis, a heightened risk of a resurgence in trade disputes, the potential unraveling of global value chains, and the impact of disruptive technologies that could change the socio-economic dynamics of nations.
“Malaysians increasingly aspire for both economic and social well-being, a high standard of living not just high incomes, fulfilling jobs not just something that pays the bills, and better public service delivery not just the existence of such services, ” Tengku Zafrul added. “The government also needs to have the financing capacity to make sure it is able to navigate this next phase of its development, ” he said.
