SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan will amend its state constitution to prevent assemblymen from jumping ship, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

"We will not be able to do it during the next assembly sitting in August as we need to send out a notice to the assemblymen.

"So this will probably be done during the tabling of the state budget at the end of October or early November," he said.On Thursday , 209 MPs present in the Dewan Rakyat voted in favour of constitutional amendments to create anti-hopping provisions within the Federal Constitution.Aminuddin welcomed the decision, adding that the electorate was fed up with representatives who changed allegiances."This is not the right thing to do," he said.

Aminuddin, who is also state PKR chief, said his party had required those contesting on its ticket in the last general election to sign an"Aku Janji" declaration that they would not jump ship if they won but that did not deter some of them from doing so."Under the pledge, those who jumped ship would be liable to a RM10mil fine but we still had wakil rakyat from our party who left.

"So, once we have such a provision in the law, it will surely be more effective to prevent MPs or assemblymen from party hopping," he added.

States likely to amend laws to prevent assemblymen from hopping as wellMELAKA: Following the passing of the anti-hopping Bill by a more than two-third majority in the Dewan Rakyat Thursday (July 28), several states are likely to amend their state constitutions to also prevent state assemblymen from switching parties. Anti-hopping law is undemocratic and shows the paranoia of politicians lest they lose position and power should a govt coalition fall apart. If a coalition is no longer viable the best recourse is to leave, rather than wreck the whole nation by a dysfunctional govt.
