A YEAR ago, a call came in at 12.30am informing my family that my father had slipped into a coma.As my mother rushed to the hospital leaving me to look after my younger brother, who was fast asleep, I was literally gripped by cold fear. From then on, I was in a daze and time seemed to stand still.
I dragged my feet to school completely oblivious to my surroundings. Though my teachers and friends were supportive of me, their words did nothing to comfort me. Thankfully, after 11 days of being comatose, my father regained consciousness. Although he had lost his mobility and eyesight, I was grateful to have him back.
Since I had been unable to cope with my emotions throughout my father’s hospitalisation, I had turned to social media to keep my mind occupied.Over the weeks upon receiving my grades, a realisation dawned on me that I should take better control of my emotions and be a role model for my brother. Just as my father had been able to recover from his health scare, I told myself that I too could improve my grades. In the face of life’s challenges, we have a choice of letting them disadvantage or enrich us. I will always choose the latter.
