KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat today passed a historic bill to amend the constitution and allow 18-year-olds to vote and stand as candidates in elections.The Cabinet had agreed to lower the voting age in September last year.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who tabled the bill earlier today, said the government also agreed to the opposition’s proposal for the automatic registration of voters. He said many countries allow their citizens to vote at the age of 18 as youth become more politically aware. He also said they are “more mature, more informed and more independent these days”.
