KOTA KINABALU: Most Sabahans have opted to keep their face masks on despite the government easing requirements from Sunday (May 1).

A check by The Star at the Gaya Street market here found that most locals were still walking around with masks on although a few, especially Western tourists, happily strolled around the popular Sunday street fair without masks.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had said last week wearing face masks was still compulsory when indoors and while using public transport. Malaysia made wearing face masks mandatory from Aug 1, 2020 under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 . Naturopathic physician Devi K said it would have been better if the government just gave the people the freedom to choose whether or not to use face masks indoors or outdoors.
