CORONAVIRUS | 'There is enough scientific evidence to show that the great apes are susceptible to human respiratory pathogen.'

| The movement control order due to the Covid-19 pandemic has come as a blessing in disguise for the endangered orangutans of Sabah.

She said there is an adequate financial allocation from the Sabah government to run the facility, one of the world’s longest-surviving rehabilitation centres.

Alsisto said that even with the MCO in force, the orangutans at the centre are well looked after by the in-house veterinarians and keepers. Asked whether the centre will remain closed to the public after the MCO is lifted, she said the decision is in the hands of the state government and it will determine whether further precautionary measures need to be taken.

“This disease can be fatal for the already critically-endangered orangutans. It is a risk that we cannot afford to take,” she said.
