KOTA KINABALU: Three Indonesian fishermen were kidnapped today in waters near the Malaysian border off Lahad Datu district in Sabah’s east coast.

It is believed seven masked gunmen boarded two boats and sped off with the fishermen towards Tawi-Tawi Island in the southern Philippines at about noon.He told FMT: “We have yet to get the full details such as their names and ages. But the kidnapped trio are believed to be Indonesians. “We have already contacted the security forces in the Philippines and working with them to establish the whereabouts of the fishermen.”

On Sept 3, Sabah police shot dead two suspected kidnappers after a brief clash also in Lahad Datu waters, some 10 nautical miles from land. Police later found, among others, live bullets, a spent bullet casing and a Garand rifle but were unable to identify the bodies due to a lack of identification documents.
