PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's campaign in the Sudirman Cup has ended with a 0-3 defeat to top seeds Japan in the quarter-finals in Nanning, China, on Friday (May 24).

Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi were given the mandate to play the first doubles ahead of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and they gave a spirited display before going down 21-13, 24-26, 21-23 against world No. 2 Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda in a 85-minute pulsating battle.

Ee Yi deserves a pat on his back as he stepped up even with a deep gash on his chin in the closing stages of the rubber game. While attempting to save a shot in the baseline, Ee Yi was mistakenly hit in the face by Yew Sin at 19-19.Ee Yi played bravely and even saved two match points before Kamura-Sonoda sealed their first win in three meetings against them.

The hard-fought win must have given Japan the boost they needed as their top man and woman singles players — world No. 1 Kento Momota and world No. 2 Nozomi Okura duly delivered by beating Lee Zii Jia and Soniia Cheah respectively. Soniia went down 16-21, 13-21 to Okura in 43 minutes while Zii Jia was outplayed 18-21, 16-21 by Momota.
