MACC chief suggests asset confiscation could be ‘next step’ for MPs living beyond their means

Thursday, 12 Dec 2019 08:17 AM MYTMalaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner Latheefa Koya attends the 11th International Conference on Financial Crime and Terrorism Financing 2019 in Kuala Lumpur November 5, 2019. — Picture by Hari Anggara

“The step by the Dewan Rakyat to approve the asset declaration motion is something to be lauded. But it should not just stop there. All 139 MPs from the ruling Pakatan Harapan have done so, as well as three from Barisan Nasional , and 14 from Gabungan Parti Sarawak , with three others from Parti Sarawak Bersatu, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and Parti Bersatu Sabah, de facto law minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong said.

Umno and PAS MPs have refused to declare their assets, claiming the government has no legal basis to compel them to do so. But she also said there were times when the media reported certain information that could jeopardise ongoing investigations.

Sadly UMNO MPs will never declare their assets.

support.

LowElsielow Many are going to have sleepless nights. I hope she will not exclude any one from this net.

Hehe

unscientific social media studies of politician family members (typically spouse and child with many from the current opposition) suggests they have access to a disproportionate level of opportunity and wealth versus the general public...

saifuddinabd Provide for freezing the recalcitrant MPs' bank accounts and paying only half their salaries and allowances for as long as they continue to not declare.

Best news l’ve heard in a while. This will have them running helter-skelter to hide their ill-gotten wealth.

Great..do it👍👏👏

Sounds good on paper but could also be abused when the powers that be is compromised. Rule of law must be uniformly applied across all spectrums of society.

saifuddinabd Start first wt yr azmin. Complaint by travel company on unpaid travelling bill of his family. But MACC will not take action. Selective. Even primary school kids knew this injustice
