Amid the lockdown, August’s passenger and commercial vehicle sales saw a steep year-on-year decline.

According to statistics from the Malaysian Automotive Association , passenger vehicles for last month fell y-o-y to 15,064 units from 48,598 units while commercial vehicles declined to 2,436 units from 5,240 units.

On the production side, the statistics showed that 13,961 units were produced in August which were a sharp decline from the 50,196 units in the same month a year ago. Passenger vehicles produced dropped y-o-y to 12,897 units from 47,913 units while commercial vehicles also dropped to 1,064 units from 2,283 units in the respective periods.MAA said in a statement that the year-to-date sales volume for last month was 4.4% lower than the corresponding period in 2020.

It also said that total industry volume for last month recovered and was 147% higher than July 2021 which was at 7,086 units. Showrooms in many states including like Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were allowed to operate since Aug 13, according to the association.“September sales will be higher than the August level as businesses for most industries, including the automotive sector had resumed albeit at certain levels,” MAA said.However, it also highlighted that factors such as the shortage of semiconductor chips may affect certain car models.
