Low can't wait to Goh on a high again with new partner

PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttler Low Juan Shen can’t wait to get cracking again with new partner Goh V Shem on the international stage.

Juan Shen will restart his badminton career with the Rio Olympics silver medallist V Shem by playing in three tournaments in Europe – Denmark Open in Odense from Oct 19-24, French Open in Paris from Oct 26-31 and Hylo Open in Saarbrucken, Germany from Nov 2-7.

Juan Shen said he was grateful to play again.“Frankly, I did contemplate retirement at one point. Besides the pandemic, my previous sponsorship came to an end in October and I also suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury during the same time,” said Juan Shen.

“I went for an operation and it wasn’t until March this year that I was able to step onto the court.“It’s such a joy to play the sport again after 20 months and hopefully, my partnership with V Shem will get off to a good start.”Juan Shen started his professional career with Chooi Kah Ming in 2018 but his partner quit in late 2019 at a time when they were ranked fifth in the country and No. 32 in the world. headtopics.com

He partnered Nur Azriyn Ayub but they made only one appearance in Thailand before losing to Zhang Nan-Ou Xuanyi of China in the first round.Juan Shen said he had to make a hard decision to discontinue his partnership with Azriyn when an opportunity to team up with V Shem came calling.

“But I felt that it was a great opportunity to try out with V Shem. I’ve never played with him but we should click, as I’m more of a front court player. The goal for now is to play well in the first few tournaments and put ourselves in a good position in the world ranking first.”
