ALOR SETAR: Cloud seeding operations have started in Kedah to ease farmers stricken with drought. The Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department did cloud seeding operations over Muda Dam and its surrounding areas at 12.30pm yesterday. Mada said in a statement that the operations had been scheduled until tomorrow depending on the cloud conditions. Capacities at the Muda Dam, Pedu Dam and Ahning Dam yesterday were 14.42%, 45.59% and 61.57% respectively. On Saturday, Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said cloud seeding operations would take place after water levels at two dams reached the critical level. The Pedu Dam and Muda Dam showed that water levels were dropping and there were concerns that the prolonged drought could affect supply to consumers. Penang earlier announced its first water alert after its two main dams on the island recorded significantly lower levels than normal due to low rainfall last year. The capacities of the Air Itam Dam and Teluk Bahang Dam on Tuesday were at 62% and 39.5% respectively. PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said they were doing their best to ensure that the state had enough water until April when rain was expected. The Meteorological Department said cloud seeding operations were carried out in six areas in Kedah and Penang, successfully resulting in rain in all targets – the Muda, Pedua and Teluk Bahang Dams – as well as padi fields in Kuala Nerang and Kampung Perupok, with the exception of Ahning Dam. Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Saadon Moktar said the department was on high alert for peat and bushfires. “We know many places could be a potential fire hazard, especially open spaces with grass that has turned brown due to the heat. “The public should stop open burning or throwing cigarette butts in such areas. “Controlled burning for religious rituals is still allowed although it’s imperative for people to inform the department on large-scale burning for such purposes as we need to be there on standby, ” he said. The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) also urged its members to reduce water usage during this dry period. “The usual practice for factories is to have reserve water by harvesting rainwater, but it is not possible now, ” said FMM northern chapter chairman Datuk Dr Ooi Eng Hock. A check with the Meteorological Department showed Penang, Johor Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Langkawi, Pasir Gudang and Shah Alam were the hottest areas at 33°C. Only Kuala Kangsar was declared by MetMalaysia to be at Level 1 (yellow) – a warning for heatwaves with a maximum temperature between 35°C degrees and 37°C for three days in a row.
