“She was an American hero and her pioneering legacy will never be forgotten,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said, honouring “her courage and the milestones we could not have reached without her.” US president Barack Obama presented Johnson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the country, in 2015.
Early in her career, Johnson used just pen, paper and a slide rule to make calculations on which potentially-deadly missions depended.
