"He pleaded with party members to give him a chance and not force him to break his promise to pass the leadership baton to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," he said.

He said political volatility pushed Dr Mahathir to opt for a non-partisan government in which the Cabinet members would be appointed based on expertise and ethical considerations, and not party allegiance.
