He said the state Veterinary Department was continuing to cull affected pigs, which were mainly kept in backyards and did not affect major commercial pig farms in the state.

So far, Jeffrey said 387 pigs had been culled while another 404 died, with a total mortality of 791 since the ASF deaths were detected and confirmed in late January this year.Jeffrey, who was speaking to reporters after launching the tagal system in Kg Rugading along Sungai Moyog in Penampang, said no wild boars had been culled yet.

Jeffrey, who is also the state Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, said ASF was detected in nine Sabah districts – Pitas, Kota Marudu, Beluran, Telupid, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Tongod. However the ASF outbreak has only been declared in six districts, namely Pitas, Beluran, Kota Marudu, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan and Sandakan.

He said the Veterinary Department was continuing to advise pig farmers on measures to check the spread of the virus."I urge all to avoid sinalau bakas for now," he added.
