For many years, pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. did not think of himself as having a"jazz career.""It caught me off guard, because I had never thought about what I was doing as a career," Marsalis recalled during a 2001 interview."Had she said 'teaching career, ' I probably would have answered commensurate with what I was doing there.
