A grab taken from footage by Japan's Himawari-8 satellite and released by the National Institute of Information and Communications on January 15, 2022 shows the volcanic eruption that provoked a tsunami in Tonga. - The eruption was so intense it was heard as"loud thunder sounds" in Fiji more than 800 kilometres away.
New Zealand scientist Marco Brenna, a senior lecturer at Otago University’s School of Geology, described the impact of the eruption as “relatively mild” but said another eruption with a much bigger impact could not be ruled out. Australia’s popular Bondi Beach in Sydney was briefly evacuated as a precaution while in California, coastal streets in Santa Cruz were awash and closed to traffic.
