Honouring women in science

In recognition for their groundbreaking research efforts, three Malaysian women were awarded the L’Oreal-Unesco Fellowship For Women in Science (FWIS) last week.

NSTeducation: The award, which was first established in Malaysia in 2006, aims to acknowledge outstanding women who are pushing the frontiers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In recognition for their groundbreaking research efforts, three Malaysian women were awarded the L’Oreal-Unesco Fellowship For Women in Science (FWIS) last week.

Lim of Universiti Sains Malaysia is aiming to develop an alternative version of light-emitting diodes (LED). She said current LEDs emit harmful blue light. Overexposure to this light could cause harmful effects to health.

Her study has found that the consumption of pure, unadulterated honey may reduce weight and lower obesity biomarkers.

“This award is instrumental in inspiring the next generation of women scientists. Today’s recipients are setting an example of how passion will make your dreams come true,” she said.
