MIRI: The total fines of RM10,000 imposed by the Kuching Sessions Court on two women for being in possession of and selling turtle eggs should serve as a warning and deterrent, says Sarawak wildlife controller Zolkipli Mohamad Aton.

Zolkipli, who is also Sarawak Forestry Corporation chief executive officer, said on Friday that the Kuching Sessions Court instead imposed the fines of RM5,000 in default three months jail on each of the women.

"The sentence was imposed yesterday after the two women pleaded guilty to possessing and trying to sell 240 turtle eggs."Turtles and turtle eggs are totally protected. "We in SFC are putting in a lot of efforts to conserve our wildlife and marine life. We have to be stern against those who exploit and abuse them," he said.

He called on members of the public who have information on those who catch, hunt or trade in wildlife or wildlife-products, as well as those who keep or abuse wildlife to call the SFC hotlines.
