Health Ministry bans three cosmetic products containing mercury

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 ― The Health Ministry has banned three cosmetic products found to contain mercury, a scheduled poison.

“Mercury is banned in cosmetic products because it can jeopardise health. It can seep into the body and damage the kidney and nerve system,” he said in a statement today. He advised traders to immediately stop selling and distributing these products as it is an offence under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.

“A company can be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and up to RM100,000 for a subsequent offence,” he added.
