Hampir 64,000 orang dijangkiti virus itu di China kini, ia termasuk 1,716 kakitangan perubatan yang jatuh sakit setakat Selasa lalu. FMTNews Covid19 Virus China

Statistik itu diperolehi seminggu selepas rakyat berang dengan kematian seorang doktor yang paling awal memberi amaran mengenai virus itu pada Disember lalu, tetapi ditahan dan didiamkan polis atas dakwaan menyebarkan maklumat palsu.

Majoriti kes jangkitan di kalangan kakitangan perubatan di Wuhan kerana ramai yang kekurangan penutup hidung dan mulut serta alat perlindungan diri di hospital yang dipenuhi pesakit. Selepas kematian Dr Li Wenliang, pakar mata berusia 34 tahun di Wuhan, 10 ahli akademik menyebarkan sepucuk surat terbuka mendesak pembaharuan politik dan kebebasan bersuara di negara komunis itu.

Wabak itu mendedahkan “kekurangan”, katanya sambil manambah China perlu melakukan pembaharuan ke atas sistem kawalan dan pencegahan wabak serta kesihatan awam. Kakitangan perubatan berkata, langkah itu untuk memastikan pesakit dirawat seawal mungkin, bukannya menunggu sehingga ujian makmal diperolehi.
