GROWING up in Menumbok, Chew Bee Koh Rosalind, felt pity for a blind man who lived alone, quite far from her kampung.

Text Size:

“I was so curious at the age of five, I asked my mother how the blind man could navigate everyday life without seeing anything at all. I was very concerned,” recalled Rosalind. She would, sometimes, blindfold herself and try walking aimlessly, mimicking the blind man. Just to experience what it was like to be in that situation. After her tertiary education in Labuan, Rosalind continued her studies abroad.

She said the land in Tuaran originally belonged to a blind couple who later agreed to have it converted into a centre for the blind to acquire knowledge, skills and a place for gathering. She was thankful to one Shelly Voo, a dear friend who went all out to get herself trained, to coach the blind by attending relevant courses in the nation’s capital at the time.

As a result, the visually impaired today have a place to go to for training, ensuring they are not excluded from acquiring information and knowledge, she said.
