Heng said that he visited both the Halal Hub and Sungai Chandong on June 3 to see what rubbish was being burned there.
Heng explained that only 9% of plastic waste globally is recycled, adding that 12 % is incinerated while the remaining 79% ends up in landfills or polluting the environment. Sahabat Alam Malaysia research officer Mageswari Sangralingam said there should be a total ban on the import of waste plastic given that what comes into the country is of very low quality and cannot be recycled.“Plastics which contain chlorine emits dioxins and furans when being burnt, so it is just as dangerous,’’ she added.
Meanwhile, Selangor state government’s Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian cautioned perpetrators that it was a crime to carry out the open burning of plastic waste.He added that the Selangor government will deal with those who are burning plastic waste illegally in the state.
