JOHOR BARU: The government has allocated RM100mil to the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) to assist the low-income group in the Indian community.

Mitra’s economic and career deputy director Dr K. Jeevan said the funds would be used to help those in the Indian community who were still lagging behind in terms of their socio-economic status.

“Our mission is to empower the Indian community to achieve sustainable growth through training and education, especially among those in the urban area, as we tackle urban poverty. “We also welcome interested parties including NGOs and the private sector with ideas to conduct empowerment programmes to join us in our cause,” he told the press after attending the Aquaponic Urban Well-being Workshop organised by Persatuan Masyarakat Setia Jujur Skudai at Dewan Taman Nesa here yesterday.

Jeevan said Mitra’s key focus areas would be on education, welfare, economy and career, policy planning and special projects. He also said any information regarding the Indian community could be accessed via Mitra’s website at www.mitra.gov.my or the “Ask Mitra” app, downloadable from Google Play Store.

On the workshop, Jeevan said 50 participants from the B40 community had been selected as the recipients of the aquaponic grants to help them kick-start their venture in the agricultural business.Tags / Keywords:
