KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will not hesitate to impound vehicles that flout the ban on goods vehicles over the Chinese New Year period.

JPJ deputy director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said such action was in line Section 64 of the of the Road Transport Act.

"We will cooperate with the Malaysian Highway Authority and highway concessionaires to monitor adherence to the road ban for goods vehicles."If anyone flouts the ban, we will instruct the driver to stop the vehicle and take the necessary action, including seizing the vehicle," he told reporters after attending the integrated operation held at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan here on Friday .He was asked to comment on an accident involving a lorry trailer at KM259.

"Category 2 vehicles are prohibited to operate from midnight until 8am. They are allowed on the road after 8am ," he said. The road ban on goods vehicles is in effect on Friday and Saturday as well as Tuesday and Wednesday .It was reported that a lorry driver and his attendant were burnt to death after their vehicle crashed into a concrete divider along the NSE near here and caught fire.

Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Nanda Maarof had said the accident occurred at around 9am on the southbound stretch near the Port Dickson toll plaza."We believe the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer onto the fast lane and crash into the divider," he said, adding that the impact of the crash caused the trailer lorry to catch fire.
