THE 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games from Sept 11-21 was a roaring success on and off the battleground.

The Bukit Jalil Sports Complex was also built for the Games, which include the National Sports Council and National Sports Institute.countries - making it the second biggest sporting event in the world then.

Team sports were introduced for the first time at the Games with rugby, cricket, field hockey and netball making their debuts.The cute orang utan was the official mascot for the Games, namely Wira . As far as the results were concerned, Malaysia performed above expectations when they hauled 10-14-12 medals to finish in fourth after Australia, EnglandThe bowlers started the ball rolling when Kenny Ang and Ben Heng struck the first gold in the men’s doubles.The other medal winners were Hidayat Hamidon ; Nurul Huda Baharin ; Carolyn Au Yong, El Regina Tajudin, Sarina Sundara

Rajah and Thye Chee Kiat ; Wong Choong Hann ; Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah , men’s badminton team: and G. Saravanan .
