She said the recent awarding of citizenship to a 17-year old by the Federal Court serves as a good example why stateless children should be recognised as Malaysian citizens.

The teenager was born in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur to an unknown mother and was adopted by a Malaysian couple. "I highly praise the most recent Federal Court judgment that a stateless child born and abandoned in Malaysia subsequently adopted by Malaysian parents is effectively a Malaysian citizen," she said in a statement on Saturday .She urged the Federal Government to expedite all citizenship cases currently pending at the Home Ministry, saying that some have been waiting for years for the outcome of their citizenship application.

"I also urge the federal government to carefully review and reform Malaysian citizenship laws to prevent such children from having a bleak future in limbo," she added.
