Ginting on a high as he lands home title again
PETALING JAYA: Home favourite Anthony Ginting recaptured the Indonesian Masters crown that he won two years ago after denying Denmark’s Anders Antonsen his career’s first title defence.The 23-year-old Anthony prevailed 17-21,21-15,21-9 in a pulsating men’s singles final that lasted 71 minutes at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday. It was Anthony’s fourth title of his career having also emerged winner at last year’s China Open and Korean Open in 2017. Anthony’s triumph summed up a splendid day for the hosts as they also won the men’s doubles and women’s doubles events. Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu had the crowd cheering when they saved two match points to pip Denmark’s Maiken Fruergaard-Sara Thygesen to the women’s doubles title. The world No. 8 Greysia-Apriyani took 80 minutes to tame the their world No. 30 opponents 18-21,21-11,23-11, denying them their first ever World Tour victory. In the men’s doubles, world No. 1 Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo-Marcus Fernaldi Gideon completed a three-peat when they outplayed compatriots Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan 21-15,21-16. China’s world No.1 mixed doubles pair Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong, also made it three on the trot, by triumphing 21-9,21-9 over Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping. It was the two pair’s back-to-back final after last week’s Malaysian Masters, which was also won by Siwei-Yaqiong. The women’s singles title went to Ratchanok Intanon after the Thai outlasted Spaniard Carolina Marin 21-19,11-21,21-18 in an epic 80-minute thriller between two former world champions.
