MONTREAL, Aug 11 ― Olympic absentee Coco Gauff played her first match since Wimbledon on Tuesday and came away with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Anastasija Sevastova to reach the second round of the WTA hardcourt tournament in Montreal.

I’m super grateful that I was able to come out of it unharmed and unscarred.” “Our last couple matches we split sets almost every time. I just focused more on this match and didn’t worry about previous ones.”Sloane Stephens, a finalist in 2018, also recovered from 2-4 down to advance past Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
