SINGAPORE, July 28 — Workers’ Party Member of Parliament Louis Chua has called for a four-day work week in light of how Covid-19 has led to a “seismic shift in the workforce culture”.

“This represents four to five times more remote work than before the pandemic. While this study was conducted on a global level, it is evident that there has been a seismic shift in the workforce culture,” Chua said. “Eleven o’clock at night, before you go to sleep, you check it again and next morning, you come back, somebody replied at 2am. How to have children?”Yesterday, Chua told the House: “While not the only reason for our low birth rates, the ‘five-day work week’ has gone beyond its intended definition and consumed our daily lives.”

“That being said, I am conscious of the fact that not every employee has the privilege to complete their tasks in a four-day work week. Those who deal with external parties, especially, are subjected to the whims and fancy of their clients’ schedule,” Chua said.
