Judge Steve Ritikos sentenced Wan Bedwi Wan Yusup, 30, to five months' jail for each of the two charges but ordered the sentences to run concurrently.
The accused was charged under Section 16 A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 but pleaded guilty to the alternative charge under Section 165 of the Penal Code. In the first charge, the accused, who was then a police sergeant, had at about 2pm on Dec 22, 2017, received gratification of RM5,000 from a complainant, surnamed Lau, so that action would not be taken against him for a case under investigation.
The accused was then investigating a report lodged by one Tan from a driving institute who claimed that the complainant, a former director of the institute, had failed to return the institute's money. In the second charge, the accused had, at about 10.10pm on Dec 28, 2017, received another RM5,000 from the complainant in front of a leasing company.
