According to Fire and Rescue Department officials in the worst hit areas of Kota Marudu, the three main rivers - Sungai Bongan, Sungai Bandau and Sungai Tandek - have receded overnight amidst clear skies.
The officials said that the Bandau and Tandek Rivers were below danger levels while the Bongan River had receded from danger levels The three rivers were the main source of Kota Marudu's flooding when it burst its banks on Dec 31, leading to over 2,000 people being evacuated over the last three days. Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Force said in a statement that the 3,324 flood victims remained at 29 evacuation centres in the affected districts of Kota Marudu, Pitas, Paitan, Beluran, Telupid and Sandakan as of 8am on Tuesday.
