Emergency ordinance not aimed at curbing free speech, says MCMC

The MCMC says the Emergency Ordinance on Covid-19 and emergency-related fake news is not meant to clamp down on free speech. – The Malaysian Insight pic Kamal Ariffin, March 20, 2021.

THE enforcement of the Emergency Ordinance 2021 is not a move by the government to restrict freedom of expression, said Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission chief regulatory officer Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin. He said among other things, it aimed to protect individuals or organisations from becoming victims of fraud and defamation due to “fake news” related to Covid-19 and the Proclamation of Emergency, which also included the court’s role in maintaining checks and balances.
