In a statement on Saturday , he said that the possibility of human-to-human transmission of the infection was limited.

"It is important to maintain good personal hygiene including washing hands regularly after going to the toilet or when hands get dirty. Also avoid direct contact with the wounds on infected people and animals, as well as things that may be contaminated with bodily fluids such as dirty clothes used by infected people.

He said the virus could also be spread through respiratory droplets and direct contact with fluids from maculopapular rashes on the body of an infected person or with items contaminated with the virus, such as bedding or clothing. "The Veterinary Public Health Laboratory and the laboratory of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia also have the capability to conduct tests to detect orthopoxviruses in animals,” he added.
