KUALA LUMPUR: Social work will soon become a recognised profession following plans to table laws to upgrade the status of social workers, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

"The ministry is taking several steps to ensure that the Welfare Department will change its focus on social worker's job scope so that they will conduct case management for the targeted groups. "In cases involving child abuse, the work involves rescuing, protection and providing counselling. The social work will become similar to professions such as lawyers and doctors," she said.

She said this was far behind the ratio of developed countries such as the US , Australia , United Kingdom and Singapore .
