On Nov 16 last year, DBKL issued new guidelines on the criteria for liquor licence applications and part of the new regulations stipulates that certain outlets will no longer be allowed to sell hard liquor. Those who want to buy hard liquor can still do so at liquor shops, pubs, bars, restaurants as well as supermarkets and hypermarkets in shopping complexes.
The association has some 1,200 members in the Klang Valley but only 30% sell hard liquor on their premises. Its president Hong Chee Meng said the association found the multiple licences that they had to apply from various government agencies like DBKL as well as Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry , too cumbersome.“Many feel that the numerous checks by enforcement authorities such as DBKL, KPDNHEP, the police and Customs were taking its toll.
