Indonesia: Throwing a spotlight on the government’s Covid-19 data management, which remains mired in problems.

On Monday, Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Panjdaitan, who leads the PPKM implementation in Java and Bali, said the government had excluded the tally of deaths from its assessment to determine the PPKM status of specific areas, stating that the current data were an"accumulation" of data from previous days.

The ministry relies on regular updates from regional health agencies to keep the database up to date. Dewi said the problems in each region were different, pointing out that, for example, data from rural areas in North Kalimantan or Central Sulawesi could not be updated regularly due to weak internet connections in some areas.

Such discrepancies were identified in Bekasi, West Java, where 94 per cent of the 397 Covid-19 deaths reported on Tuesday were an accumulation from July and June. “We are trying to confirm the status of more than 50,000 active cases. So, in the next few days, there will be anomalous increases in deaths and recoveries in Covid-19 data reporting,” said Panji, adding that it was hoped the effort would bring about greater accuracy in the government’s virus data going forward.
