The rain on Thursday and Friday also left more than 3,700 displaced as it flooded residential areas, roads and farming fields in the southern region.

The causalities include 13 dead and two missing from the last two days of heavy rainfall in southern South Korea, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said in a report.

South Korea's interior ministry on Friday said that it had designated seven cities and counties hit hardest by heavy rain that lasted for the past week in the country's central region as a special disaster zone to rapidly provide assistance of the central government. The ministry said the government preemptively chose the areas as the special disaster zone to offer the early assistance of the central government for the restoration of damaged properties and the relief grants to residents.
