PETALING JAYA: 10,000 frontliners in the maritime transportation sector have fully completed their Covid-19 vaccinations on Tuesday (July 27), says the Port Klang Authority (PKA).

Its general manager Capt K. Subramaniam said vaccines administered so far cover 40% of the total port and logistics workforce around Port Klang, including seafarers and port workers.

Subramaniam said the vaccinations are under the first phase of The Transportation Sector Vaccination Programme managed by PKA, in collaboration with Marine Department Malaysia, Northport Bhd, Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Port Klang Free Zone."The vaccination programme is expected to reduce the overall cases with severe symptoms and relieve the pressure on hospitals, besides assisting the country in achieving the targeted herd immunity.

"Despite receiving the Covid-19 vaccine, the public must continue to adhere to the standard operating procedures prescribed by the Health Ministry in our collective effort to combat the pandemic," he said in a statement on Tuesday. Subramaniam noted that they were also working closely with the Transport Ministry and Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry to vaccinate an additional 15,000 port and logistics personnel in Port Klang under the second phase of the programme, which is expected to begin as soon as more vaccines are available.

"PKA would like to thank the MOT, Mosti, Protect Health and volunteers whose invaluable contributions ensured a smooth and orderly implementation of the programme," he said.
