HONG KONG (China Daily/ANN): Different sectors in Hong Kong on Monday slammed the violence unleashed by anti-government mobs, calling for the courts to hand down harsher sentences for lawbreakers who seriously jeopardize public safety and law and order.

Ma, also chairman of the Hong Kong Legal Exchange Foundation, emphasized the deterrent effect of prison sentences while calling for the courts to hand down harsher sentences to lawbreakers responsible for the ongoing chaos. Concerned and"heart-broken" that young people, especially secondary school students, often get embroiled in political turmoil, Wong reminded underage students, who are too immature to understand politics but are abetted to join violent protests, of the legal liabilities and the dangers to their lives arising from such behaviour.
